Products to Prevent Hair Loss
We spend $1.5 billion a year to keep our hair from falling
out, according to Newsweek. Some products are more useful
than others, but there’s still no surefire method
to keep the hair on our heads.
The scientific name for male pattern baldness is Androgenic
alopecia, and its causes are mostly hereditary. Alopecia
is marked by the oil glands and hair follicles in the
scalp deteriorating. It can also be seen when the hair
above your temples recedes or the hair at the crown of
your head thins. Male pattern baldness usually affects
us around age 30 where hormonal changes accompany aging.
Don’t take it to mean you’re getting old
though, plenty of young people also experience hair loss.
Products to Prevent Hair Loss: Minoxidil
Who would have known that a pill for high blood pressure
could save you from bald spots? Minoxidil is a hair
loss prevention product and that when used in a lotion
for the scalp has been known to help 20 percent of
men maintain hair. The product is best used for bald
spots, less for a receding hairline, in that it prolongs
the growth phase of hair follicles. If there aren’t
any hair follicles left, it’s not the drug for
you. Minoxidil must be used topically on a regular
basis for it to maintain its effect.
Products to Prevent Hair Loss: Finasteride
Finasteride is another hair loss prevention product and
was originally used to prevent the enlargement of the
prostate. It inhibits the same hormone in our body
that causes hair loss. DHT, or dihydrotestosterone,
is a type of testosterone that takes hair off your
head and puts it on your back. Merck, the producer
of Propecia, claims positive results on nine out of
ten men.
