Preventing Hair Loss
In his play “The Comedy of Errors” Shakespeare
wrote: “There's no time for a man to recover his
hair that grows bald by nature.” Well, science
might just have proved the bard wrong. It’s true
there are no guarantees with hair loss prevention medication,
but the bard with the bald pate may have had to bite
his tongue had he lived today.
Unraveling the secret of hair loss prevention may be
more difficult than deciphering Shakespeare’s verse,
but there are a couple of things you can do to that may
prevent balding.
First Things First
One theorist claims Shakespeare went bald because he
had syphilis. Don’t follow the bawdy bard’s
example. If you’re concerned about your hair,
one must live healthily. That means eating well and
keeping your hair healthy. Frequent perms or the use
of shampoos and lotions with alcohol can strip the
hair of its natural oils, making it brittle. It can
even destroy the hair follicle itself. For most men,
hair loss is genetic. Some 33 million American suffer
male pattern baldness.
What You Can Do to Prevent Hair Loss
There are two major products on the market for preventing
hair loss. One product is topical. It contains Minoxidil,
a chemical originally used to treat high blood pressure.
For results Minoxidil should be scrubbed into the scalp
regularly. However, only 20 percent of users actually
see results. Another product on the market contains
Finasteride, a chemical once used to prevent prostate
enlargement. Taken in mild doses in pill form, Finasteride
has been shown to help in hair loss prevention and
in some cases actually reverse it. According to Merck,
nine in ten men show results. If Shakespeare were alive
today, hair loss medicine might serve him well.
