Medications for Hair Loss
Are there really any effective hair loss medications?
The type of hair loss that affects a person plays a large part
in the ability of pharmaceuticals to provide effective relief. Unfortunately,
for a defect of the immune system, a condition known as alopecia areata,
there are only two medications that seem to offer any help at all. The
first is a corticosteroid that is most often injected into the affected
area. The other is a tar-like cream that is applied to the area for 20
- 60 minutes at a time. This topical medication is called Anthralin and
is commonly used to treat psoriasis It is a relief to most alopecia areata
suffers that the patches often come and go in phases. One patch may be
experiencing new growth while another is losing hair.
The more common type of hair loss by far is called androgenetic
alopecia. This type of hair loss is experienced by 50%
of all men and women over the age of 50. Fortunately
there are some very effective hair loss medications on
the market for this condition. The hair loss medications
that are most commonly used to halt the progress of hair
loss due to androgenetic alopecia are minoxidil and finasteride.
Both of these hair loss medications show some ability
to restore hair that has been lost but are most effective
in stopping the progress of hair loss. Therefore, as
with most conditions, it is best to get good medical
attention early on in order to effectively treat the
cause of hair loss.
Finasteride is a medication that
was originally found to be effective in treating inflammation
of the prostate gland. It was then discovered to be effective
as a hair loss medication as well. Minoxidil, used orally
to reduce high blood pressure, is used topically as a
hair loss medication.
