What Causes A Man's Hair Loss
Causes of A Man's Hair Loss
Before embarking on a program of treatment, or even surgery,
it is important to establish the reasons behind a man's hair loss. There
are many factors, which may be responsible for this situation. Some drugs
are known to cause hair loss and this side effect is usually stated on
the patient information leaflet under "hair loss," "alopecia," or "baldness."
Certain
groups of drugs are well known for causing hair to thin or fall out altogether.
These include antihypertensives, antidepressants, and cancer therapy. Hair
growth usually returns to its normal vigor once treatment is completed
and medication stopped. Stress is another causative factor. Of course the
situation may be worsened by losing hair in combination with the problems
that caused the stress in the first place.
Male pattern baldness is an inherited condition. If
there is a strong family record of male pattern baldness,
the male children will likely have it too. Contrary to
popular belief, male pattern baldness is not handed down
through the mother's genetics; either side can contribute
the genes.
Treatments for a Man's Hair Loss
Treatment regimens vary depending on the causes of a
man's hair loss. In the event of stress, counseling
or even stress reducing drugs may be appropriate. Chemotherapy
usually occurs in cycles, most patients find that their
hair grows back relatively quickly once therapy is
completed. Zinc or omega-3 fatty acid deficiency can
be reversed with dietary supplements or making more
of an effort to include green leafy vegetable, oily
nuts, and oily fish in a diet. Scalp treatments are
available over the counter, two of which are approved
by the FDA for male pattern baldness. One of these,
finasteride, is available in tablet form, only from
a physician. Hair transplants offer a permanent solution.
