Male Pattern Hair Loss
What Causes Male Pattern Hair Loss?
There are a variety of causes of hair loss in males. Some causes
are transient, others can be cured, and some again are permanent. It is
important to discover the exact nature of the baldness before embarking
on a treatment regimen or surgery. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy used in
cancer treatment commonly cause hair loss. While this can be distressing,
the hair usually grows back quickly. It has often been reported that it
grows back curlier, stronger, and even with a slight reddish tinge. Stress
or poor diet are also responsible for quite a few cases. There is usually
an accompanying deterioration in finger and toenails if nutrient deficiency
is the cause. Male pattern hair loss or "androgenetic alopecia" is
the most common cause of baldness in males. This is genetic, so if a family
has a long history of male pattern hair loss, the male children will likely
suffer too.
What Treatments are Available for Male Pattern Hair
Loss?
If stress is the causative factor, hair will usually
regrow quickly. Sufferers of long-term stress may need
to seek counseling or medical assistance. While chemotherapy
and radiation therapy are both unpleasant, the hair should
regrow as soon as the treatment ceases. If Poor diet
is the cause then following a healthier eating regimen
or taking supplements should result in rapid improvement.
Foods containing zinc and omega-3 fatty acids, such as
leafy green vegetables and oily fish, are recommended
for healthy hair growth. There are also over the counter
and prescription medicines, which may work. There are
topical applications approved by the FDA, which can be
bought from a pharmacy. There is also a tablet form of
finasteride, which is only available through a physician.
Should all of these methods fail, the patient will need
to resort to hair transplantation.
