Male Pattern Baldness
What Causes Male Pattern Baldness?
Male pattern baldness is a very common complaint, and is otherwise
known as "androgenetic alopecia." It can occur in any male, at
any time, after the onset of puberty. Some men are unlucky enough to suffer
major hair loss by the time they are in their early twenties, others may
make it into their nineties with a full head of hair. In the same way that
some people are born handsome, others not, some may become bald prematurely.
There is a strong genetic influence, which predicts male pattern baldness.
In other words a strong family history of baldness on either side is a
good indicator that the male children will suffer from male pattern baldness
too. In spite of this, male pattern baldness can still occur in families
with little obvious family history. For some reason, it is widely believed
that male pattern baldness is carried only through the mother's side of
the family, this is simply not true.
What Treatments are Available for Male Pattern Baldness?
There are various treatments available for male pattern
baldness, which vary widely in efficacy and cost. There
are two medicines approved by the FDA for male pattern
baldness: minoxidil and finasteride. The topical applications
are both available over the counter; the tablet form
of finasteride is only available on prescription. These
medicines need to be used continuously if the patient
wishes to retain his hair. If neither of these treatments
for male pattern baldness works, the sufferer has a
few more choices available.
If coming to terms with
male pattern baldness or a hairpiece are not viable
alternatives, the patient will need to seek surgical
intervention. There are a variety of different surgical
procedures, which vary in terms of cost, and density
of transplanted hair.
