Male Hair Loss
What is Male Hair Loss?
Male hair loss can be due to a number of different factors,
the most common of which is genetic, i.e. somebody who comes from a family
with a history of baldness, will likely suffer themselves. The way in which
the hair is lost is usually a good indicator of the cause. Male pattern
baldness or "androgenetic alopecia" is characterized by thinning
of hair on the crown, and/or a receding hairline. As well as genetics,
other factors may play an important part in male hair loss too. These include
ill health, poor diet, stress, trauma, drug induced (prescription and illicit),
and even adverse reactions to hair care products such as colorants or permanent
waves. Most of these are easily remedied by simply removing the cause,
or improving psychological well-being. With time the hair will generally
regrow.
Can Anything Be Done About Male Hair Loss?
If the causes of the hair loss are traumatic, e.g. a
clump has been pulled out, severe vitamin deficiency,
stress, or chemotherapy (cancer treatment), then the
hair will usually grow back of its own accord. It is
important in these cases to look at the cause and to
treat that cause. Sometimes this is not possible, and
in the case of male pattern baldness, other treatment
options should be considered. There are currently two
products marketed for treating hair loss. Once all
of the factors have been considered and taken into
account, and medical intervention has failed, those
suffering from male hair loss have three options to
choose from:
• Take a philosophical view and accept it.
• Invest in a hairpiece.
• Consider a hair transplant.
