What is male baldness?
The disorder formerly known as male baldness is a hereditary
condition called androgenetic alopecia. It is a condition that actually
occurs equally in all men and women over the age of 50 years so the name
male baldness is errant. The leading to male baldness is that as the body
ages, it produces an excess of the hormone dihydrotestosterone or DHT.
This hormone causes the hair follicles on the scalp, prominently in the
crown and forehead area for most men, become increasingly smaller in diameter.
The hairs that are produced by these follicles are thinner and grow for
shorter periods which results in not only finer but shorter hairs. Eventually
the follicles become very tiny and stop producing hair altogether.
Surgical help for male baldness
The different processes that are commonly used to deal with
male baldness are scalp reduction surgery, hair transplant and hair flat
surgery. These techniques are frequently used in combination with one another
and provide fabulous results. Scalp reduction surgery is a many phased
surgical procedure whereby the scalp is stretched by introducing a form
below the skin for a given time. When the scalp has been stretched enough
the form is removed and the scalp is pulled up so that more densely populated
areas of scalp cover bald areas. The bald skin is removed and hair transplant
surgery is usually used to fill in the hair at the front of the hairline.
Drugs that help male baldness
There are a couple of medications that have proven very effective
in the treatment of male baldness. They are finasteride and minoxidil.
Used on their own or as follow up to hair restoration surgery, these drugs
are very efficient at halting male baldness and even reversing some of
the effects.
