What is Hair Transplantation

What is Hair Transplantation?
Hair transplantation is considered among the most prestigious medical hair restoration surgeons to be the very best procedure for returning the look of scalp hair to a natural looking full head of hair.

What is involved in hair transplantation?
Hair transplantation is a cosmetic surgery that relocates healthy, productive hair follicles of the patient from areas that are not affected by androgenetic alopecia (male/female pattern baldness) to areas that are very thin or bald. Techniques most commonly used today involve harvesting of very small strips of scalp that contain no more than a few hair follicles. The donor site is then carefully sutured closed using plastic surgery methods that leave virtually no visible scaring. The harvested scalp tissue is then taken to a microscope where it is divided into still smaller segments containing one, two or three follicles.

The hair transplantation then is done at the receptor site. There are some surgeons who combine procedures. One common technique that is combined with hair transplantation is scalp reduction surgery. In this procedure, the surgeon makes an incision in the balding area and inserts a stretching form beneath the skin. The incision is closed and the skin given time to stretch over the form. When the skin has been stretched enough, the surgeon removes the form and pulls the loose skin up and sutures it closed. This effectively tugs the more hair populated scalp up to cover the balding areas. This process is usually followed by hair transplantation which uses very small segments to fill in the most visible frontal areas.

Hair Flap Surgery
Another process that is often coupled with hair transplantation is hair flap surgery. This process involves moving larger segments of scalp from well haired areas to thin or bald areas. Flaps would most often be used in the crown area and be followed by hair transplantation at the front, hairline areas. Creating a natural hair line in a manner that is aesthetically pleasing almost necessitates the use of hair transplantation of single follicles.
