Hair Transplant Surgery
How many people are affected by thinning hair?
Hair loss to the point where it caused a noticeable thinning
or balding patches in the scalp region is a very widespread problem. In
the US alone there are an estimated 30 million women and 50 million men
who suffer from hereditary baldness. Statistics show that by the age of
40, 40 percent of all women and a slightly lower percentage of all men
show notable signs of a disorder that figure rises to 50% of both by age
50. This type of baldness has long been erroneously called "male pattern
baldness". The proper term for this condition is androgenetic alopecia.
This type of hair loss is accountable for 95% of all hair loss problems.
It is interesting to note that race has no effect on this type of hair
loss. It is experience equally across all ethnic boundaries worldwide.
How many people turn to hair transplant surgery?
Among surgical methods of hair restoration, hair transplant
surgery has come to be widely accepted as the best alternative. In 2002
there were over 800,000 cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the US.
Of those, 12%, or over 66,000 were surgical procedures performed on men.
The 4th most common surgery performed on males was that of hair transplant
surgery. Considering that women are not figured into these numbers, it
is easy to see that hair transplant surgery is becoming quite common.
Another factor to take into account is that there are
still only 2 non-surgical treatments on the market that
have proven effective in halting the loss of hair and
while both do restore a small percentage of the hair
lost, the noticeable results from that are often not
enough. Hair transplant surgery, followed by the use
of minoxidil or finasteride to stop hair loss from affecting
the transplanted follicles provides very pleasing results.
