Hair Replacement Surgery
Hair replacement surgery is an effective, safe way to
restore a head of healthy, vibrant hair. The surgery
itself is an outpatient procedure performed under local
anesthesia or nitrous gas. Healthy hair is removed from
areas of the head that are unaffected by pattern baldness.
The donor hair is converted into implant grafts by a
hair replacement physician who has years of training
in the surgical discipline. Since the person who donates
the transplant hair that is the same person who receives
it, chances of rejection are slim. Each hair replacement
surgery lasts a few hours. The number of procedures a
person needs depends upon on the severity of hair loss,
their long-term goals, economic and time limitations,
and the amount of donor hair they have available.
Hair replacement surgery is usually recommended after
drugs and topical treatments have failed to restore a
person's hairline. Sometimes the other treatment options
are bypassed entirely if the pattern baldness has progressed
beyond the aid of non-surgical techniques. After three
months, the transplanted hair begins to grow and, after
a year, it matures and continues to grow for the recipient's
lifetime.
After Hair Replacement Surgery
Many people report that the post-surgical discomfort
is less than they experience following routine dental
appointments. Doctors may prescribe mild pain relievers
or antibiotics. Patients return home immediately after
hair replacement surgery, and typically return to work
the following day. Until the body restores the blood
supply to the newly grafted area -- usually in five
days -- patients are asked to avoid heavy exercise
or lifting. A hair replacement surgeon may combine
a hair thickening, topical remedy like minoxidil to
help speed the appearance of a thick, new hairline.
