Hair Regrowth Products
Pattern baldness, called alopecia, is a progressive,
often irreversible genetic condition that destroys healthy
hair follicles. Men and women with this condition not
only experience severe hair loss, but lowered self-confidence
in work or social settings. As they watch their receding
hairline, people with alopecia are also subjected to
an advertising blitz of hair regrowth products, which
can contribute to confusion and despair. The choices
can be simplified by a qualified physician, who can evaluate
the extent of the patient's hair loss and long-term outlook.
If caught early, alopecia is treated initially with
topical solutions or hormonal medications. For men and
women, hair regrowth products can be combined with surgical
hair restoration if hair loss has been extreme, leaving
large patches or bald spots behind. Transplant surgery
is safe, and restores healthy, growing hair to parts
of the scalp where alopecia has done its worst.
Hair Regrowth Products, Simplified
Male patients may combine topical treatment with prescription
hormonal hair regrowth products. The well-known topical
and oral-medication solutions include Rogaine (minoxidil)
and Propecia (finasteride). Rogaine is a topical regrowth
product applied to the hair two twice a day. It can repair
follicles damaged by alopecia and may also keep healthy
follicles from drying out. Propecia is a prescription-only
medication that can counteract the production of DHT,
the main hormonal element of alopecia that destroys growing
hair. Propecia is taken once, daily.
On the minus side, some men report that they lose the
new hair within a year of ending finasteride treatment.
They also have reported negative sexual side effects
from using the medication. Because of its impact on the
body's creation and release of male hormones, Propecia
is not safe for use by women.
