Hair Loss in Women
Hair Loss also occurs in Women
The condition that has commonly been known as "male
pattern baldness" has been very badly misnamed.
This condition is really called androgenetic alopecia.
This term indicates that it is a genetic hormonal form
of hair loss. The reason that the occurrence of this
type of hair loss was not noticed in women is because
the patter that the hair loss takes is, in itself less
noticeable. Women tend to lose hair in a more widespread
manner than their male counterparts. The result is that
this type of hair loss in women does not often result
in large bald patches but a significant thinning of the
hair spread more evenly over the scalp.
Is hair loss in women actually more common than men?
Statistics prove that hair loss in women is actually
slightly higher than men experience at the age of 40.
Noticeable hair loss in women at age 40 is 40%. By the
age 50, both males and females are even at 50% of all
people suffering from significant hair loss. The treatments
for hair loss in women are the same as for men with the
same problem. Drug therapy involving minoxidil (a topical
application) and finasteride (pill form) can do much
to halt hair loss in women. This is very good news for
those who are diagnosed early enough.
Since neither medication
causes dramatic re-growth it is very important to catch
the condition in its earliest stages. Unfortunately,
until quite recently, cosmetic surgery for women has
not been as available to restore hair loss in women as
it has been for men. Since the hair growth tends to thin
rather than bald, any process that involves larger segments
of scalp is not effective. That is why it has taken until
now, when microscopic dissection of donor tissue can
be performed, to introduce women to the procedures of
hair transplantation
Hair growth is a process that is largely affected by
hormones. As such, there are many very naturally occurring
causes of hair loss in women.
Child birth causes hair loss in women?
After the birth of children most women will typically
experience an increased loss of hair over the period
of the first few months. What actually happens here is
not actually an excessive loss of hair but rather it
is caused by the hair that has been retained longer than
normal during pregnancy being lost in a more condensed
period. So, child birth does cause hair loss in women
but it is only hair that was excess during the pregnancy
and not truly abnormal at all.
Birth control pills cause hair loss in women?
When a woman first begins taking the birth control pill
it does cause some hair loss in some women. Again, this
is the result of hormonal influences. Once the body becomes
accustomed to the new levels of estrogen and progestin
the hair loss will level back out to normal.
Male pattern baldness is a cause of hair loss in women
too?
The name male pattern baldness is indeed a misnomer.
Women suffer from the disorder known as androgenetic
alopecia almost as often as men. In fact 40% of all women
who are menopausal have some level of ADA. When women
experience ADA, the pattern for hair loss is rather less
fortunate than what males suffer. This disorder causes
hair loss in women in a more even thinning of the hair
rather than the heavier losses in the frontal and crown
areas that men have.
Areata alopecia causes hair loss in women
Women no more frequently than men or children do experience
hair loss do to this short circuiting of the immune system.
This cause of hair loss in women, children and men is
caused by the immune system rejecting the hairs. This
cause of hair loss in women is typically temporary.
