Excessive Hair Loss
How much hair loss is excessive hair loss?
The average person should lose between 100 and 300 hairs per
day. As part of the healthy growth cycle, every hair is shed every 2 to
7 years. The hair detaches after a period of dormancy (3 or 4 months) that
causes the hair to detach. The follicle then shrinks slightly to aid the
hair in moving up the hair follicle and being released. This phase typically
lasts about 2 - 6 weeks. The follicle then is ready to produce a new hair.
When the follicle begins to cycle through this process too quickly, the
hairs that are produced become short, fine and brittle. So, if you notice
that you are loosing more than your normal amount of hair and that this
lasts for more than a couple of months, you can begin to classify your
hair loss as excessive hair loss.
Do I need to worry right away over excessive hair loss?
Generally speaking, excessive hair loss can not be considered
a problem unless it lasts for more than a couple of months. However, if
you are loosing hair at such a rate that it is coming out in handfuls or
your brush is filled with it daily then you should consider this excessive
hair loss and seek medical advisement as soon as possible. For women there
are a few factors that can very naturally result in excessive hair loss
and you should not be concerned. During pregnancy the hormone that causes
hair follicles to become dormant for the shedding of hairs is not produced.
This means that there is virtually no natural hair shedding during pregnancy.
As a result there is an abundance of follicles that are waiting to cycle
into their dormant phase when the baby is born and the birth hormones return
to normal. At that time you can expect excessive hair loss for a few months.
When first going on the birth control pill is another time that you will
find higher than normal hair loss and this too is due to a shifting of
hormonal balances.
