Are You Coping With Baldness
In our culture the loss of hair and baldness can have
a profound effect on the sufferer. We are a people who
place great importance on appearance and on conformity.
When someone loses their hair it is very difficult. Coping
with baldness can be a trial for men and women but is
particularly hard on children.
What do you mean coping? Bald is beautiful!
If one can achieve this level of independence it is a
great boon to the individual. The greater a person's
sense of self is the less trouble they will have coping
with a condition such as baldness. It can be harder for
females to realize this type of attitude for coping with
baldness. Women are more susceptible to dramatic responses
to their baldness. As a result it is more difficult for
them to cope with baldness. Men have a tough time coping
with baldness because it is seen as one of the most common
signs of declining attractiveness for men. Also it can
be tough to cope with baldness because it is a sign of
aging. Anything that points to our mortality can be a
touchy subject. Baldness is so very visible and has been
one of those realms that have achieved very little acceptance.
Kids coping with baldness
For children, the need to conform is more powerful than
for any other age group. Because of this, kids can have
the toughest time coping with baldness. However, this
is a wonderful opportunity to help them to really grasp
their individuality and they concept that beauty does
not depend on a lush head of hair. Rather they can be
very lovely and not have a single hair on their heads.
For children the mechanics of coping with baldness are
also tougher. Since kids spend more time outside in more
raucous activities, the natural protection that hair
gives from the sun and foreign objects getting into the
eyes and nose is sorely missed. For these kids the apparently
simple solution of putting on a hat can become another
problem to cope with as most hats do not fit properly
on a completely bald head.
